Bar + Tables is a conceptual bar, restaurant, and book swap geared toward backpackers and travelers ages 18-30. The location of Ocean Beach, California appeals to the budget-conscious audience with a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Situated near a popular youth hostel, this laid-back bar and restaurant offers travelers popular dishes from around the world, along with an assortment of global and local craft beers. Patrons can also buy, sell, and trade books, or purchase travel-related necessities. Travelers can share a drink, eat and trade stories together, or find a cozy chair to curl up with a book.
Project Background
This idea for a restaurant/bar/book swap stemmed from my travels around Asia and Europe. Many cities I stayed in had establishments that were some combination of those, often with the addition of lodging. Ocean Beach seemed like an excellent market for this because of the low-key nature of the community. Bar + Tables would have a different atmosphere than other bars in the neighborhood, more like an extension of the common area of a hostel - an open space for strangers to meet and hang out, while also providing cozier areas for those who want some personal time.

Design Solution
The branding has a handmade feel to it and makes use of earthy tones and natural textures. Maps and passport stamps are used throughout the branding to reflect the customers' common ground, while the brand colors and chalk textures call to the low-key, open nature of the clientele.

B+T in Action
To create an immersive customer experience, Bar + Tables features things like a gigantic pegboard map, where patrons can share tidbits of travel knowledge, and a bookswap for when time away is necessary.

The check presenter doubles as maps of the Ocean Beach area and Downtown San Diego.
